Spotlight on Community Food Growing - Dundee Food Festival
Skip to Main Content

We will be showcasing the work of the Community Growing Spaces around the city.  We are a vibrant network of growers who support and encourage each other to grow food and reduce food waste.

Our stall will host lots of plant related activities like: making upcycled pots, sowing seeds, making edible jewellery, grow your own Mocktails and a compost demonstration.

We will display lots of Dundee-grown fruit and veg. We will be promoting volunteer opportunities, news, events and activities in Dundee’s growing spaces.

The organisers of this event have pledged to...

Eliminate Single-Use Plastic
Going The Extra Mile
Incorporate Seasonal Local Produce
Reduce Food Waste

We will offer seasonal local produce, where available, and indicate these where appropriate

We are a group of like minded growers based all over the city. We have joined together as a strong network to promote what we do and to support and advise each other. We grow edibles in all the spaces in the city. We try to use no chemicals and source and share as many materials locally as possible. The bulk of our compost comes from the city’s recycling depot at Riverside. We also encourage biodiversity in all our spaces by planting for pollinators. The city centre is particularly strong in terms of the plants for pollinators we sow and grow in the planters. We will be spreading the word about our growing spaces and giving tips on how easy it is to have a go at growing your own.

We have a plan in place to reduce food waste

Our whole ethos is based on growing fresh, seasonal produce. We use all our produce to supply local people, to feed our volunteers, to help supplement food banks and to feed our staff. We deliver cooking workshops to show how homegrown veggies can be used in the kitchen. Our growing spaces all operate compost systems to ensure any garden waste is composted. At the Festival we will be demonstrating how composting works and using natural materials to make jewellery. We will be offering seed sowing in recycled pots and showing how to recycle household waste into helpful gardening items.

We will not use single-use plastic

We will be using cardboard recyclable cups for our Mocktails and all our garden materials will be reused at the end of the festival. Visitors will only be given plants or biodegradable cups, pots or jewellery (flowers) to take away.

Other

We will be using public transport for the majority of the volunteers on the day. Our materials are sourced locally where possible. All the plant material on display will be grown in Dundee.
