STEM activities, demos and make & takes with Dundee Science Centre - Dundee Food Festival
Skip to Main Content

Join Dundee Science Centre’s expert science communicators for fascinating sessions as we delve into the science behind the food you eat, with a variety of activities for you to explore. Get hands-on with using microscopes and take a closer look at the plants that we use for food.

Learn about how food can be grown using limited space and resources through a method called hydroponics with our 3D printed mini-vertical gardens. Engage in a thrilling game of Protein Top Trumps, an educational card game that reveals the protein content of various foods and illustrates the environmental impacts of their production.

Afterward, craft your own seed bomb to take home either to grow your own food or to enhance local biodiversity. Inspire, Explore and Discover with Dundee Science Centre, where science meets everyday life in exciting new ways!

No booking required – just come along.

The organisers of this event have pledged to...

Eliminate Single-Use Plastic
Going The Extra Mile

We will offer seasonal local produce, where available, and indicate these where appropriate

We will not be offering food to the public. Instead, we will be discussing how food is grown and how we can prioritise resources to produce healthy sustainable food.

We have a plan in place to reduce food waste

We will not use single-use plastic

There is no single-use plastic in out activity kits. Everything we intend to bring with us is part of a re-usable science engagement kit designed to be reused. We will offer the public a chance to make their own seed bombs which will be taken away in paper bags. As an organisation we use Vegware – a compostable food packaging so even in-house we do not use single-use plastic.

Other

Our stall will be presenter led and feature props, games and hands-on science learning activities to encourage people to think about where their food comes from and better understand the resources required to grow enough food for everyone on the planet. We will be bringing plants, seeds and seed-bomb making kits. The plants have been grown by our staff using peat-free soil and re-used containers. The seeds are sourced by staff members and available to view in reusable magnified containers. The seed bomb kits contain peat free soil, clay, native wild flower seeds and once made, will be taken home in paper bags. The goal is for participants to spread these in their local area to promote biodiversity and support pollinator species. As a local organisation, our transport requirements are low. We will use our electric van to deliver the bulky items of our kit and the staff will walk to and from site as required.
